REVUE AND LITERARY JOURNAL SHOWCASE SENIOR TALENT

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif., August 30, 2004 - Taking on the mission of changing the way people think about aging, a group of seniors from Southern California will stage their fourth annual multimedia show called “The We're Still Here Revue” and release their first literary journal called “Still Here: Voices from the Second 50 Years” on Saturday, October 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the Skirball Cultural Center's Magnin Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The Revue will include live music, short films, a Golden Age of Television-style comedy sketch, poetry, dancing and storytelling - all created and performed by seniors representing affordable senior apartment communities from North Hollywood to Long Beach to Duarte. The literary journal features stories, poetry, memoirs, excerpts from books, artwork and photography from Southern California elders ranging from very-low-income seniors living in affordable housing to older celebrities like Ed Asner and Robert Guillaume.

“This year the show will be something truly not to miss and we're also publishing our first literary journal to come out that day,” said Tim Carpenter, Executive Director of More Than Shelter For Seniors (MTSFS), the nonprofit that pulls the show together each year. “I always enjoy watching the faces of the audience that comes to see the Revue. They walk in expecting to see a grade school level talent show and leave the auditorium blown away. And now we can watch their faces as they read the amazing writings in the journal as well.”

Highlights of this year's Revue include: Judge Harry Pregerson of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals will receive the “Still Here” Award; former Coasters and Little Richard singer/guitarist Al Jacobs will perform, backed by the Little Dog All Stars, house band for MTSFS' “Good For Life” radio show on KPFK-FM 90.7; legendary comic character actors Richard Erdman and Len Lesser, who have collectively starred in hundreds of films and TV shows, will perform a live Golden Age of Television style comedic sketch; country-western music legend Buck Page will serve as cowboy singer-storyteller, narrating the Revue; plus many more great acts.

MTSFS is a nonprofit provider of life-enhancing programs to senior residents of affordable apartment communities in the following cities: Ontario, Anaheim, Duarte, Pomona, North Hollywood, Whittier, Azusa, Long Beach, Fountain Valley, Huntington Park, Pasadena and Norwalk. MTSFS programs, delivered at 17 properties to more than 2,300 low- and moderate-income seniors, include health and wellness programs, college-level educational classes, arts programs, recreational activities, transportation, health education, intergenerational mentoring programs, and many more.

MTSFS programs are designed to give seniors the opportunity to continue growing intellectually, creatively and emotionally. Programming focuses on activities that stimulate the mind, body and spirit, to achieve more active engagement in life, help prevent illnesses that could require more costly types of care, and promote residents' ability to continue living healthy and independent lives.

The Skirball Cultural Center is located at 2701 N. Sepulveda Boulevard near Mulholland Drive.
